Franco Harris was an American football player who spent 13 seasons as a running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL). With the Steelers, he was a nine-time Pro Bowler and a four-time Super Bowl champion. He was a major contributor to one of the most famous plays in professional football, the Immaculate Reception, which gave the Steelers their first playoff victory.

Franco Harris was a former professional football player from the United States. He was a fullback for the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks (NFL). Franco also attended Penn State and was drafted in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft.

Franco started his early career while still in college. He joined the Nittany Lions of Penn State, where he primarily served as a blocker for All-American running back Lydell Mitchel. 

 

However, he won, as evidenced by his early career stats:

  • 115 carries for 643 yards and ten touchdowns in 1969. 12 receptions for 189 yards
  • 1970: 675 yards on 142 carries and eight touchdowns. 66 yards on six catches
  • In 1971, he ran 123 times for 684 yards and six touchdowns.
  •  97 yards and one touchdown on ten catches

 

Franco Harris’s Cause of Death:

Franco Harris died at the age of 72 on December 20, 2022, at his home in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. He died just 3 days before the 50th anniversary of ‘The Absolutely perfect Reception. Harris’s death was unexpected because he had been active on social media only a few days before and had spoken to visitors at the Heinz History Center the day before. His death was compared to that of Pittsburgh Pirates legend Willie Stargell, who died on the day PNC Park officially opened in 2001, and only two days after Stargell’s bronze statue was installed at PNC Park. Soon after his early demise, tributes began to pour in.
