Donald Trump NFT Sale Is the Freakiest Thing on Social Media Right Now
When in doubt, expect Donald Trump to do something so ridiculous that you will simply sit and look directly off into the distance, wondering what the hell is going on. That is the case with these trading cards, which characterise Trump as. well, whatever he thinks of himself. It’s the scariest part.
It was only a matter of time before Trump got involved with NFTs. NFTs are bad, but Trump’s recently introduced collection of “trading cards” is far worse than the usual issues that support them. They are egotists who are interested in his life and what he thinks of himself. And, wow!
With his approval ratings at their lowest since 2015, Donald Trump announced on Thursday a series of $99 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) linked to a collection of digital religious art the former president in a variety of appealing ways at least, if the images on the collecttrumpcards.com website are to be believed. If you buy 45 cards, you can win “thousands of prizes,” including a guaranteed dinner with Donald Trump, though it is unclear how many other people will join.
The fact that the website images are not officially part of the 45,000-strong NFT offering is pointless because you are buying blind. Each $99 purchase will result in a randomly generated trading card, some of which will be exceptional. Other copies will be produced in multiples of 2, 5, 7, 10, or 20 copies. There is a limit of 100 per buyer or residence. Each card contains a sweepstakes entry for what appear to be uniformly Trump-centric prizes. Those who are interested can enter the sweepstakes without buying NFTs.
- The NFTs are not connected with image ownership. Buyers are granted a limited licence to use, publish, and display the artwork, subject to various restrictions, including a ban on commercial applications.
- To receive the NFTs, buyers will need self-custody digital wallets, though they can be purchased with just an email address.
- Cards can be transferred, but a 10% re – sale royalty applies.
This would not be the Trumps’ first project into non-traditional finance. Melania Trump announced the launch of her own NFT line in December, highlighting art based on her own paintings. It was revealed in February that she had purchased the entire $185,000 worth of Melania Trump NFTs herself.
