The crime that the women have survived is never seen. Only momentary hints of the immediate wake are shown to us. Rather, we see a group of women come together as they have to quickly decide on their group’s course of action.
She said-
When I finished reading Miriam Toews’ book, it really got under my skin, provoking in me ideas and questions I had never expressed before about the world I live in.
Concerns regarding self-determination, community, culpability, trauma, healing, faith, and systems of power. Remarkably, it gave me hope. This movie came to mind as a fairy tale, in my imagination. While the film’s story is specific to a small religious community, I believed that it needed a broad, epic scope to reflect the scope and universality of the issues it raises. It felt extremely important that the film’s visual language breathe and develop in order to achieve this.Every frame of the conversation about how to mend a broken world needed to communicate the limitless potential and potential that it enclosed.

Rooney Mara and Claire Foy Explain the Reasons for Violence in the Women’s Talking Trailer:
After “Me Too,” there has been a lot of media coverage of the systemic atrocities committed by men. We are now aware that terrible things do occur. How to react is something we’re still having trouble with. The majority of Sarah Polley’s Women Talking takes place in this area. A fictional Missionary society where the women have been drugged and raped for five years is the setting of the movie, which is based on the Miriam Toews novel. The offenders have been taken into custody, and the men have left the city to pay their bail. The women of the society make decisions here without the usual male decision-makers, and they must choose between forgiving the offenders as the elders have demanded or fighting back with violence of their own.
The trailer for Women Talking includes a who’s who of indie luminaries, including Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormand, Judith Ivey, and Sheila McCarthy. Ben Whishaw is not visible in the image. Women Talking premieres in a few theatres on December 2 and then is released nationwide on December 25 following a rousing TIFF debut.

Two girls absently bind themselves to one another by bundling their braids together. It’s an image that director Sarah Polley never addresses in her new film Women Talking, but one that sticks with you as you watch the story of a group of women who eventually reach an agreement to make a choice that will save their lives.
The film is a powerful response of a novel that is loosely based on the horrifying true story of women in a Mennonite colony who were again and again attacked by the men in their community while they slept, attacks the colonists initially attributed to Satan or hallucinations.
After screenings at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Sarah Polley’s drama has already been hailed as an Oscar contender. Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, and Judith Ivey are among the outfit of actors who play the women who gather in a barn in secret to decide how to react.

The true story:
The attack circumstances that served as the basis for Women Talking are scary. Men in the Manitoba Colony raped girls and women for years by using a general anesthesia originally intended for cattle. In 2009, a victim who woke up in the middle of an assault managed to catch two of the culprits. The accused men were at first imprisoned by their own people before being turned over to Bolivian police. Seven of the eight accused persons were found guilty at trial two years later, while a ninth was able to avoid capture.
